Hi! I'm getting close to applying finish on my first. I am using an ebony headplate. Do I need to grain fill the ebony in order to get a flat, smooth finish?

No Mike, ebony is close-grained, and as such does not require pore filling,
regards,
jack

well, for me it depends on the piece as to whether the pores are close or not ... I simply use the gel CA on all of them .... takes about 3 minutes to get it prepped, and you are golden.

My thanks to both of you. I thought that I had heard or read that there was a general consensus that it was closed grain, but thought it might be prudent to ask before I began finishing. Thanks again!

Another thing to consider is the finish you are using. My first was Tru-Oil and the pores are very apparent, even after 8 coats and using the sealer/filler. My second is lacquer with a couple seal coats of shellac underneath and it is mirror smooth.

Thanks, Matthew. Finish will be lacquer.
