I had a friend design me a label a while back. I had him but a "Born on" section on it. (I must have been having one of those beverages with the born on date at the time) When is a guitar "born".
Is it
A. When the plates are joined? ( I join my tops in bunches, but I join backs when I'm ready to build)
B. When the sides are bent.
C. When the end blocks are glued in.
D. When the box is closed.
E. When the neck is installed
F. When it's strung up.

I'm sure there's other choices for a "born on" date also eek

Is it anything other than a fancy, fragile cabinet until its strung up?

Interesting choice of subject line.

My post, same subject line, 5 months ago: http://luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=21395&hilit=when+is+a+guitar+born

Several good answers in there...

For me .. its strings on ... until then its just a guitar shaped drum with a weird handle !!! Or a really cool (and usually expensive) place to keep wood chips and sawdust ....

the rest are more "conceived on" dates IMO....

That's a great thread. I either missed it of forgot it.

Tony, I may have to change my labels to a "conceived on" date. [clap] [clap] [clap]

Isn't a guitar just an assembly of materials brought together to create a sound? I think all guitars were born with the big bang/creation/theory of your choice. :ugeek: :D

Since a guitar is built to create sound...I think it's born when it makes its first sound. Strings on
and the first notes struck on them and the guitar's life begins in my opinion.

I have about two dozen very close to coming out of the womb and waiting to be born right now.
Can't wait to spank them and hear them cry for the first time

Regards,
Kevin Gallagher/Omega Guitars

Just after it finds it way into someones hands who can set it up to get the best from it and at that very moment someone who plays real well picks it up and smack it's behind.

Cheers

Kim
