Rob Girdis, respected Seattle luthier, was found dead in his home earlier this week, an apparent suicide.

Rob had been building guitars since 1978. He was a consummate craftsman with an artist's eye for shape and color and attention to detail.

No information about memorial services have yet been announced.

Usually undiagnosed depression. If it gets serious, there's nothing worse.

The work on his website looks like he was a talented guy.

Terrible news, Robs work has always been an inspiration for me. I specifically remember playing his very lively yew wood parlor a few years ago at Christy Songs HB party. He will certainly be missed.

Hi all,

I am one of the half dozen students who
worked with Rob weekly. He was always a
patient instructor and kind friend. His
skill with razor sharp planes and chisels
produced some beautiful guitars.

I have heard that there will be a memorial
in Arlington, WA in a month or so.

Rob was a great guy and we'll miss him. Last HGF he had a beautiful little parlor that knocked my socks off. Darlene, our Purchaser had a funny Rob story. She went by his exhibit at the 2007 HGF and he had a fly swatter on his table. She asked about it and his reply was that everyone seemed to have a gimmick and he had none, only his guitars. He put the fly swatter on his table and everyone who walked by asked about it, voila...gimmick.

He seemed sad the last few times we've talked to him. Makes one wonder if there's something we should have done or said to lighten his load.

Condolences to his friends/family/loved ones...

I regret that I never got the opportunity to meet him, although he was local for me.

So sad,

I met Rob at the last HGS, He was a true gentelman, and as humble as the come.

What a total bummer.

Thoughts and prayers with his friends and families.

I liked Rob. We'd only met twice, but would talk to him occasionally by phone. Our last conversation
was about six weeks ago and he seemed a little less energetic and excited than what was typical of him.
Glad I got to know him....albeit on a limited basis.

What loss. We'll be praying for his family as they go through this tough time.

Sadly,
