Any experience out there dissassembling the neck joint on this old guitar? One came into the shop needing a neck reset.

Any wisdom gained through experience would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

The neck joint should be a short dovetail. I reset one of these a while back and that's what I found. It was a thin body 125. The neck I did was loose in the joint when I got it. I popped it by running hot water into the joint around the fingerboard extension and wiggling the body until it dropped out.

Hey Louis, thanks!
Yes, that's what I was hoping for.
So you didn't have to pump steam into the 15th fret slot, etc?

This is also a thin body, in fact the label says it's a 125-T, which I assume means "thin".

Thanks for the report!

Steve

Steve,

I didn't use steam in this case because the joint was already broken and I had decent access. The dovetails had split so that the neck shaft was moving but still held captive in the mortise, the outer edges of the dovetail were still glued to the block. Just dripping some hot water in there was enough to get it apart. I have use this method a few times where I did not want to introduce steam to the neck shaft / fingerboard extension joint on mandolins and archtop guitars.

Steve,
The traditional repair technique for these is a couple of woodscrews through the heel.
Unfortunately mine is so aflicted (not by me)
