Hey Lance .. thats why its not the typical Karol !!! BTW .. the next one, already in the works, aint that symetrical, if you catch my drift. Although I am keeping it to one neck.
The brainchild for the idea was actually from a student .. you never stop learning. Greg wanted his 2nd guitar to be a traveller, and he had been researching other travel acoustics, the voyagair, a swiss made one, Andy's, .... so after a bit of thought, I said sure, we can make something like that, but the neck will be totally removable - less complicated than hinges and the like. So once I started thinking more about that, it dawned on me that if a gutiar has one neck, there is no reason it cant have two, if the scales line up. From there it was mechanics of getting the joint to work and align every time, and I figured that all out on this one, the prototype. Learned form this one too .. Gregs will be slightly different - and better !!! Kudos to another of my students Doug who supplied the metal lathe time and effort.
JJ - I dont really voice tops per se like some do .. I work more to strengths of materials, and brace sizes. The internal pattern is unlike any I have ever seen here, or in any other guitar for that matter .. based on Larrivees slope dread 50/60 series. I use different brace sizes than he, but like a lot of factory stuff, us solo builders tend to build lighter. I also dont brace baritones allthat different from a regular gutiar, so I was fairly confident it would be fine.
Some one had asked about the bridge, as its not my typical shape ... a client had asked for something different last year for his baritone, and I made 4 prototypes for him . Once he picked, I had three others kicking around to use somewhere !!! I knew I wanted the saddle to be 3/16 to better allow for intonating the baritone side, so I went with that.
The guitar does have two saddles, and you can use either for either neck, but the action and intonation change a touch. I tried my darnest to get one saddle to do both, butthe higher action needed onthe bari low end jsut wouldnt really allow it to be optimum on the guitar side. The neck however feel almost identical - they micrometered out to within a few thou before finishing, and of course the matching headplates and tuners make the two versions look identical no matter what neck is on the body. Not having the FB extension on the neck(s) shortens up the necks for a more compact fit - a custom case is in the works.
Again, thanks for all the kind words.
