What is an appropriate depth of the route for a rosette?

I'm thinking of inlaying individual pieces of material (inspired by Somogyi's interrupted rosette style, though not really the same) and am trying to figure out what thickness said material needs to be..I'm thinking ~1/16" assuming a similar depth cut into the top

Mine are always around 0.08" or aprox. 2mm thick.

thanks...I guess I'm too lazy to do a full search of the archives...obviously there is a limit to how deep the route goes into the top and I'm assuming there is a fine line between too deep and not deep enough..

I usually make my rosettes about .100", then inlay them and level them out afterwards. Usually I try to carve the chanel about half the soundboard depth. Since my tops are about .090'' to ,.100'', it leaves about .050'' for the rosette, but I have done quite thin before, about .020" I think (that was a mistake though!).

the reason I was/am inquiring is I was looking at some fancy veneer as an option, but I am thinking that even at the thickest (.03") they are too thin...

I mean really, you have to allow for sanding and once you get to a certain point transparency becomes an issue...

If using veneers (as I did a few times) .. laminate two or three flitch cut pieces together in sequence, and inlay just below flush. Then when you final sand you shouldnt go thru.
