On previous builds I have used wood bindings. This time I'm using tortoise. What grit sand paper should I end with before applying finish so I don't get visible scratches?

I normally stop at 220 on any binding material just like the rest of the guitar. 320 probably wouldn't be too fine though, or 280 as Tony mentions.

I scrape it with a razor blade, that gives a very clean prep before finishing.

I will say though, everyone says plastic is "easier" than wood. I find it to be a real PITA.

Dave - it's plastic toroise...

Brock - I like using wood bindings but this is my first venetian cutaway and I thought plastic would be easier to go around the horn....

My latest J-45 had tortoise bindings and I ended up with lots of scratches in them. Worked them just like the wood, except I went to 400g. Smooth and clear, shines like a mirror. Actually look better then when they were new out of the box.
