The deadline for registering for the ASIA Symposium is April 10th (you can still register after that, but late registration fees will apply), so I just wanted to remind everybody to register, and encourage those who may not have made the decision to attend yet. My recommendation: do it! There are lots of good reasons to go to one of these, and I seriously doubt you'll regret it if you do.

Was starting to feel like there was less of a need for things like ASIA and getting together at all given the internet and it's vast, fast, and easy way of everyone seeing each other when and how they want to.


However- looking back on my own path it seems the biggest growth jumps and "epiphanies" come from being physically around those that inspire the most. Yes it's easy to e-mail them, it's easy to see some videos, but things change, the techniques they use change, sometimes they don't want to talk about things on-line, sometimes things aren't clear, and of course lets not forget that pictures never do anyone's work justice, and you can never get a real sense of true quality unless you see it for real and "hold it in your hands".

There is just something the internet lacks in a huge way that gathering for real provides. Not bashing the internet, it's great too, but you need both to be whole.

ASIA is a great group, many of the best luthiers and artists in their feilds will be there, and it's always fun. Lets not forget as well that some of the the best contacts we make come from speaking to one another in person.

Yeah, rub it in... I envy you guys who live closer to the venue. I had the pleasure of meeting several of the people who frequent this and other instrument builder’s forums at the one I went to in 2005, Todd was one of them. Great fun, go if you can!

Is there a place one can get transcripts or some sort of detailed proceedings with the text from the talks.... Especially for Noobs like me...

Apparently, great things happen at these sorts of symposiums every year... and we can't get info from past years.

The GAL eventually publishes most of the presentations at their conventions as articles in American Lutherie. I seem to recall seeing some of the presentations at ASIA symposia published as articles in Guitarmaker, but I don't think ASIA is as systematic about doing that. You could always ask the folks at ASIA if there is any way to get ahold of transcripts - I've never heard anything about them being made available, but you never know. In the past, I've often taped or video'd presentations at both GAL conventions and ASIA symposia for my own reference later.

I registered yesterday for the Symposium and Nadine mentioned that the "deadline" is not really that, but a date by which they hope to have a good idea of attendance.
I would urge folks to register soon but if they must wait, by all means get in touch whenever.
I've attended most of the Symposia since ASIA formed in the mid eighties and there really is no substitute for meeting one's peers and sharing common experience and concerns.
Folks who are new to the work and want to pick up techniques and methods will find plenty to absorb. Personally, I'll be doing a demo on my particular method of French polish (for the lack of a better term) and a good friend, Steve Kovacik, an expert in neck setting, with be sharing his technique as well as many other presenters.

Sorry I doubled up on a ASIA post. I didn't see this one before I posted this morning. First cup of coffee, wasn't sharp yet.
I have paid my fee's and I am ready to learn! The next week is McKnight jam and I am there also!

I really, really, really wish I could go, but ...

I'm going to be sitting at a friend's summer house next to the ruins of Troy on the Aegean Sea instead ...

Hi Folks,

I wanted to mention that there is a tentative schedule of events at Symposium '09 if you go to guitarmaker.org and take a look. Someone mentioned that the deadline for registration was April 10th, but that's been moved to 1 May. After that, late fees may apply, but we need to get a good idea of the number of people coming, and registration is certainly going on after that.

I'm especially anticipating Kevin Ryan coming to Symposium '09. I've also been in touch with him about the original article and photos published in spring Guitarmaker 1997. This is #34 and has been in demand by those trying to order back issues. It is currently out of print, and I intend to reprint it in Guitarmaker in the near future.

For those of you wanting to be in a festive lutherie setting, Symposium is a great few days. I'm personally inviting everyone interested in sharing ideas with some notable presenters. They will certainly share theirs with you.

I won't be able to make it this year. My son is graduating from high school that same weekend. My family seems to think that I should be there.

I've been to three ASIA symposiums and I would definitely go to this one if I could. The sessions (both the classes and jams in the evening) are very informative. My favorite parts, however, are the vendor's hall and lunch. At lunch, you can sit next to someone like Judy Threet, Linda Manzer, Grit Laskin, Dick Boak, or Al Carruth and pump them for information on any aspect of the craft or business. Although with Al Carruth you don't have to pump. He seems to be pressurized and you just have to open valve

As for the vendor's hall, bring your check book. Some of the best deals on wood can be had. Blues Creek, LMI, and StewMac are there. The Zootman , The Duke of Pearl, and Carl Barney are often there.

Oh Jeez, I'm so envious of you all.

I emailed Chris Herrod at LMI with my wish list for woods I hope they can bring. He replied right away, saying, "Cool! I am glad you made these requests -and encourage others to do the same."

So, if there's anything in particular you'd like to see on their table, let Chris know. I don't think he will make any promises, but he clearly welcomes the input.

As an exhibitor, I will have two or three guitars on my table, but I will also have several back and side sets of various woods, plus some tools and things (unless I've already sold them all on the OLF classifieds!). I checked with the folks at ASIA, and exhibitors are allowed to do that. I will even have a Performax/Jet 10-20 drum sander for sale. So, come on by my table!
