I am on my 3rd build (14 fret OOO) my past two I have used EIR for the bridge plate. This next one I would like to try maple. Any suggestions on what to use, I have read not to use figured maple but outside of that I can not find any real guide lines. Basically can I pick this up at Woodcraft or Home Depot or is there something more specific that I need?

thanks
Richard

Sugar maple is best and is often called 'rock' or 'hard' maple at lumber dealers. Bigleaf is quite a bit softer.

I like rock maple and I want the grain running to avoid all the pins holes lining up in the same grain line.

There are as many opinions on bridge plates as anything, I guess. I like hard maple, rift sawn. One thing I do, though, is flex the piece along the grain. Two identical pieces, and one will snap in two, who knows why? Just give them a little test, it's all you can do.
