Anyone have one of these in 3/8" and 5/16" who can tell me what the ID is. I'm wanting to see if I can use them to cut fret board dots from shell.

I posted this at MIMF too, but doesn't the screw extractor grip/cut in the reverse direction? You would have to cut using a reversible drill. Not a major issue, but most are slow for cutting.

Not a problem. I'm interested in the ID. It's either one of these or I'll make template and use a collar and mill with a PC310 router.

I read somewhere about how to cut shell a bit oversize, then CA it onto the end of the same drill bit you'll use to drill the hole. Reverse the bit in a drill, and hold a sanding block against the spinning shell to get it to exactly the drill diameter.

Haven't tried it, but I would if I wanted an odd size dot, or of a type of shell unavailable precut.

I do it like steve said.Except you should also grind the drill bit flat on the bottom so the shell has a larger area to glue it to.Works great!

Well, I knew I would never get to sleep wondering where those things got to so I went downstairs and found them....

O.D. .370-I.D .311
O.D. .292-I.D. .240
O.D. .310-I.D. .250

I have three sizes unlabeled so those are the actual measurements for the three. The cutters are a bit rough so I would expect some chatter. I also had to measure several times and take a rough average. I do not think that they are precise enough for you but there you go.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Steve.
I know about the drill bit thing as that's how I've made different size dots in the past . It's very time consuming and I'm looking for a faster method, Looks like I just might come up with another router jig. Maybe a road trip to Woodcraft today.

Chris, I don't think this will work on shell, but I have used a piece 3/16 brake line and sharpened the outside to a bevel, chucked in the drill press and cut cherry position markers...worked great.

Chuck
