I am using an old grinder to take some steel off some blades. I have the 'standard' harbor freight router speed control used with heat blanket (from John Hall)

How do I figure out if I can use it on my old deck drill (40's Milwakee-looks like a looney toons drill) and the small grinder?

I'm getting old and cautious I guess....I want to use the drill for a strope machine with leather wheel. but 2000 +RPM is a bit much...

As long as none of the smoke escapes feel free to use it, but remember electrical devices need the smoke inside to function. l

Check the amp rating of the tools and if they are less than 9 or 10 amps you should not burn out the controller, but remember the grinder will run hotter and have less power.

If the tool has a "brush" motor you can usually use the speed controller. As Fred said, don't use it if the motor pulls too many amps or for continuous duty.

Ok, cool, should I put a fan on the controller to cool it off? Would that help? Thanks

Most hand tools have brushed motors but not all. Most bench top and floor mount tools have fixed stater/armature motors
