I burned up my upspiral 1/4" bit hogging out mahogany for a dovetail neck connection. I use my dovetail bit to do the final cuts. What do you guys recommend for a good router bit for the job?.

First, table saw as much as possible then use the router to finish the job.
I use carbide endmills. Wood is often harder on tool bits than steel.

I waste out dovetail mortises with a 1/2" dia ocemco spiral bit with a plunge tip.
I think that a 1/4" bit is a little skimpy for the job.

The cost of router bits is actually insane compared to end mills now. It's funny, but I think it's mainly because it's mostly hobbiests buying router bits so they're not prone to shop around. Anyhow, buy carbide end mills unless you need a bearing on it.
