In my experience cherry, like maple and walnut, tends to yeild a 'forward' or 'cutting' sound. Since I've found red spruce to be the 'Ethyl Merman of top woods', the combination with cherry often ends up on the harsh side for me.
OTOH, I made a little cherry/redwood 14-fret 00 over the summer that has been a real pleasure. I made it for the Montreal show, using only domestic woods: I'd had to leave my best guitar at home the year before because it's BRW. This one has a cherry neck and persimmon fingerboard, with the trim mostly in walnut and maple.
As always, YMMV.
