Does anyone have a source for a digital paint thickness meter that will work on wood? The least expensive one I can find is over $1700.

Thanks

A simple "after the fact" way to measure thickness is to take the acetate I used to block the soundhole (held in place with a balloon) out after finishing. By bending it, the finish you sprayed will flake off. Measure a few flakes with a micrometer & you'll get a good idea of the deposition before leveling/buffing.

Thats a great idea Dave.

I know there is a machine that will do what you want. Julius Borges has such a rig and I saw him demo it at a NEL meeting a few years back. It worked kind of like a sonogram, rub a gelly on your top and move the stetasscope like probe around and it will read the film thickness of the finish. Julius was intrested in the finish thickness on the old guitars. I think he said the rig cost him $5000, but my memory is a bit flakey on that detail.
