I finally found a little time to make it to the garage and work on something guitar related. I am putting together a Troji this weekend. I have most of the parts cut out and ready for assembly. I still need to decide how I’m going to handle the handle. I am building it to the plans that Rod True posted.

Does anyone have pics or revised designs for their Troji handles?

John, if you have Rod's instruction booklet, there is a pattern for the handle in there. If you don't have the booklet, search for a recent thread about Troji and you will find the link to his PDF.

Admittedly the handle I came up with isn't the best. I was just using the materials I could easily source and would work. I sure like Todd's wooden screws and handles but I'm too cheap to go and buy the Beall's Wood Tapping & Threading Kit from lee valley.

Todd that's a great looking rosewood handle.

Thanks for the pointers Todd - I'll have to make one of these soon - it looks MUCH more ergonomic than my current lackluster device which really doesn't do a very good job of holding the guitar firmly. I have a set of those wooden thread cutters somewhere....

Well I finally finished building my Trojy. I still need to add the foam, but it is together. I used Rod’s instructions which were great. I don’t know if I would have done this if the instructions were not laid out in such detail. All in all it was fairly easy once I figured out what I was doing. It took me longer than most have reported to build, but I think if I were to build another it would go much quicker.

My original question here was about the handle. I was trying to come up with a handle that I wasn’t going to break the crank or catch something on it. I liked Todd’s knob idea, but I also liked the ability to sort of put some leverage on it if I needed it. So I ended up cutting a circle with my table saw (first time doing that) and putting a hole in the circle. I like the way it works. The hole really speeds up the opening and closing time. After messing with it I don’t think the leverage concern would have been an issue. When I first assembled it my screw holes were just a bit off center from each other. I had to enlarge the one in the side to get it to move properly and this relived the tension I was seeing originally. If I were to make another one I would make the disk a bit smaller. Mine is about 9 ¾ and the disk will catch the sides and limit the amount you can open and close the vice when it is at its extremes. I think I am OK but won’t know for sure until I put a guitar in it.

Yea it is definitely overkill and I will have to watch it. Things were tighter when I had everything mocked up. Once I opened the hole to the side so it lined up better with the hole in the shelf it was way easier to turn.

Hmmm, the link I found seemed to be broken. Does anyone have a working link to the .pdf or a copy that they can email to me. Unfortunately I'll be offline for about a week but will check back if I don't see any emails on my return.
