Some good tips Todd. I just recently did a 57' Tele maple neck but I tapped the frets out to the treble side.
Funny that sometimes they seem to slide out better that way.This one had a nice thin finish - no chipping at all.
I know those thick finished fb's can be a pain! This old neck turned out well.

Please excuse my ignorance, but why did they slide in sideways? Are they a different kind of fret wire than the usual hammer in type? :?:

One thing I do that seems to help keep the punch where I want it is to "set it". I hold the punch on the end of the fret and holding the tip down towards the fingerboard. I then take one quick firm hit. Basically I just create a divot in the fret so the punch has place to sit.
