I have heard that some people build their OM guitars with deeper sides than the plans call for. I was wondering what the advantages are to doing this? I am working on an OM model now and I'm debating if I want to do this. Also, I'm thinking of doing a forward X bracing on this one but am wondering if it is necessary to change the X brace angle slightly to accommodate the forward position. As always, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Steve Hornback

An OM with deep sides is called a "Southern Jumbo" in some circles. I'm building a 12 fret OM the same depth as a dreadnaught, even as we speak, bent the sides last night. quilted Honduras Mahogany back and sides, and an Adirondack Spruce top. The extra depth and length will enhance the bass response. It's going to have very low action and will be played with a light touch.

Really? I thought a southern jumbo was the next highest model offering after the J-45 (both dreadnoughts) I had heard that the extra air space allows for a deeper bass and other similar things. I'm sure someone knows.

No no, a Southern Jumbo is what we called my old girlfriend.
Up north it's what we call a two-stooler. ;)
