Haven't posted here in a cockatoo's age

About to finish another guitar in lacquer and again thinking on how to keep the finish out of the bridge and stop bar holes. I have tried tissue, thin scrunched plastic, Plasticine and just shot lacquer straight over them and cleaned up after.

Inevitably I will lose finish when pulling the fill or have it shatter when tapping in the bushings. Worst thing is time consuming lacquer repairs putting a barrier between the customers cash and my wallet.

Any one have a tip?
greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

I finish over them and press the bushings in hot. The heat will keep them from chipping the finish.

I install the bushings slightly below the body surface before finishing, and cover them with tape.
I use a Dremel to create a step for bushings that have a lip.

Love to know how you get a dremel to cut a nice even step like that - I was thinking on using a 19mm countersink bit. Currently masking up and about to start on shellac as pore fill. This one is in korina and the grain is very open which takes a lot to fill out. So I have a few days before I start laying down lacquer coats to get this right. I drove the stop bar studs just below the surface and I will tape them off as per your suggestion.

btw that looks like a very nicely built instrument and the burl is quite stunning [:Y:]

I mounted the Dremel in a router base, and routed it out by hand.

ok good hands i reckon - i tend to be less trusting of getting a neat result
i will do it like that but mount a 16mm mdf on top with 2 x 14mm holes @74mm centers punched through as a bit of a guide
