I have something a bit simpler but I want to modify it with your ramp idea. When I first used my shooting board, I was bothered by the excessive frictional resistance I found using Baltic Birch ply as the riding surface for my plane. One thing that made a significant difference for me was to rub a small amount of Beeswax to the side of the plane. It transfers to the board and really makes the plane ride a lot more effortlessly. Make sure you have a good grip on the plane or it could become airborne at the end of the stroke! <BG> |

Excellent tutorial/video as usual Todd. I understand that incorporating the ramp means that one uses more of the width of the plane's blade, but I'm not sure why that is important. Is it just that, without the ramp, the blade would lose it's edge quicker in that one area in contact with the wood? |

Thanks for the great tutorial Todd. Do you see any potential problems from the stop not being at a 90 degree angle to the boards? |
