Well, after getting sidetracked trying to get two OM's done before Christmas, I finally got some time to do the finishing touches on this one and get some pictures taken. 

Camatillo back and sides
Bearclaw Sitka top
Curly Maple Bindings
Box Elder rosette and back inlays
Ebony bridge, peghead veneers, and fingerboard
Paua Abalone inlays
Target USL finish (look at the pictures and you will see that I must have been one of the lucky few who got a can with Rick's "Wishful Thinking" included)

Beautiful work Dave, well done!. I really like the bearclaw and the Camatillo has that nice plum colour of BRW with the sap enhancing that look just nicely. Great wood combos all round and an excellent finish.

So, how does she sound???

I guess I forgot the most important part, the sound.  Well, based on how poorly I play it sounds great.    It is very well balanced and quite loud.  I was surprised at how loud it actually is.  It has a deep mellow sound, but not that d*********t sound.  It rings forever.  If A. I could play well, and B. I had a recorder I would post some sound clips, but alas I stink at playing and other than a headset, I don't have a way to record and post.  I have 6 guitars strung up now, and this is the best sounding to my ear.  I have two that I just strung up last week with sound ports that sound very good too, but it is hard for me to judge if they sound better than this one without the port.  I can't believe how much of a difference a port makes in the volume and tone.  Maybe I will cover the ports and then compare.

Dave nice job! I sure like the look of the OLF SJ..and the ones I've played have been really nice. Yours looks terrific!

The back with the sap wood is killer too as well as the nice bear claw on the top.

Nice shot too of the mirror finish with the plane reflecting clear as a bell in view.

You should be very, very proud my friend.

Great looking guitar, David. I have been interested in Camatillo and this is the first guitar I've seen made from it. It looks stunning! The wood doesn't seem to have that purple color I have heard about.

Question: Is that a real V joint at the headstock? or a faux one - I just saw the tutorial for the faux V jointed necks... I was unaware that they even existed - but they are really cool.. and of course real ones are super duper cool!
I was not a big fan of this body style originally(speaking strictly from a personal aesthetic opinion) - but they are really growing on me - especially when I see so many finely constructed SJ's built by OLF members like yourself... with such fine details...

Thanks for all of the kind comments.  As I said earlier, to me it sounds great.  Every guitar I build sounds better than the last so I figure I must be learning something right! 

Charlie - No, it isn't a real V joint.  I carved that in when I made the neck.  One day when I feel real brave I will attempt a real V joint, but for now fake ones will have to do.

Max - I am thrilled with the Camatillo.  I got it from LMI.  Unfortunately the picture on their site of the wood is horrible so I had to go out on a limb and hope for the best.  I am going to send Chris a few pictures of this guitar and give him permission to use it on the site so maybe they can change the lousy picture they have now.  I think if more people saw how great the wood actually looks, more people would buy it. As far as the purple color, the sides are more purple than the back, but rest assured when the wood is sanded, the sawdust is bright purple.  It looked like Barney exploded in my shop for a while!

Bruce - I didn't make this one for anyone in particular.  I am debating on selling it with the understanding that this is still a 'learning' build.  It turned out very well and I think someone would be happy to have it for the cost of woods and maybe a new tool for the shop.   If not, I will probably donate it to the local college or HS music dept. or a church worship team.
