I have used a toothbrush to clean up squeeze out when gluing braces with hide for a long time. Never thought of using it to clean up frets when gluing with hide or tightbond.

For what’s it’s worth it works great.

Toothbrushes were made for cleaning surfaces. They excel at it. I use them to clean up the fingerboard of nasty crud, or as a brush to clear chips during drilling operations.
