how do people like to soften their fingerboard edge and what kind of tools do you use.

After the board is fretted I use 320 wrapped around a drafting eraser to break the sharp edge between the frets. Doesn’t take much.

It's more popular right now, but several makers have done it for a long time and never crowed about it.

I have one client who prefers the sharp edge. He wants to wear it down gradually by playing it.

I usually just graze the edge when I'm filing the bevel on the frets.

OOOO mini file on shop-made handle, mine's BRW. This little pocket tool will take down sharp fret ends from winter dry outs and break and smooth the fret board edge. Keeps the edge of the board and the ends of the frets in the same plane. Same tool is essential for fretting and setting the ends so it's a money maker for us and mine gets used so much in the winter I often when at work have it in my pocket.

Right. It is automatic, when I bevel the fret ends, if I don't try not to.

I use a thin scraper, followed by sandpaper wrapped around a soft block.
