Torture!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Old furniture don't have solid wood most of the time. The furniture makers often even match the veneer on the front and back! I have made that mistake a couple of times, but I once did get BRW enough for 20 parlor pyramid bridges from a solid piece of supporting wood from a table under the BRW veneered table-top :-)

Back in 2016, I started thinking I would make a second violin, so I started hanging out on Maestronet. I was lucky enough to see a thread where someone was selling a bunch of wood their father had accumulated before he died (he had a truly massive collection!). Among my finds was a piece of flamed maple about 3 feet long and about 2X3 inches. Guess where my binding will come from?

Luthier bias! Every pretty piece of wood we think should become a guitar.
I recently cobbled together a small loom out of curly maple for weaving scarves. I could justify doing that because the bugs had infested it. After a thorough roasting in the oven for a few hours to make it safe it was still structurally strong enough to use for these "lesser" projects.

That is no lie. I used to see rosewood furniture and practically cry. I attended a funeral once and the coffin was made of rosewood. When I was starting out, I got a lot of wood from pianos and old furniture. After all - it's ALL just raw material in my eyes.
