The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Rob..... what does the rosewood look like afterward? And do you have to treat the rosewood differently when it's time to apply finish?

Rob,
This treatment process is done before I even begin working the wood so it is going to get planed, sanded extensively before I even think about finish work.
I also always pore fill and use a seal coat over my pore fill before applying a finish.
I have never experienced issues.
