This method has been used on guitars quite a bit. Most of the ones I've seen have been solid body electric guitars, but it's been done to acoustics too. I remember running across several how to videos on this about 5 or 6 years ago. The results some people were getting looked way cool. Some of the videos were thorough enough to include lots of warnings about the danger. That was enough to spook me off of giving it a try even though I was very tempted. |

Looks like a cross between wood burning and arc welding to me. I'll stick with either a pyrography pen or a laser for that kind of thing myself... Dave |

I was intrigued by the process when it was first demo'd on youtube several years ago. Looks cool and probably has some fun and artistic applications. Always horrible when people do dumb stuff and die but it is pretty hard to stop stupid behavior. Chuck pointed out 33 people died doing it since 2017 or about 6 per year. Since the result is a random thing, I don't think I'd ever try it on an instrument I poured my heart and sole into without knowing exactly what the outcome would be. I wonder how many people blow their house up every year spraying lacquer or using solvents indoors without adequate ventilation and appropriate self education (ie, not reading warnings on the dang can!). But I'm betting lots more than 6 per year. My verdict is click bait. |
