I used to post and participate in discussions on a different forum for years. Whenever I had a repair question or needed to know something, the usual response was "if you have to ask you don't need to know" or "You need to find someone that knows what they're doing" and the conversations would almost always devolve into something stupid that was off topic and opinions would always get thrown around as absolute fact. So I simply quit asking questions. That forum continually devolved and I simply left it alone. With this group of guys/gals it is a much different story. I have never once been told that my question was stupid or that it was insignificant. In fact I've learned more through discussions on this group and the information that is posted with things like the "build alongs" than I ever did with 8 years on the other discussion forum. Even with noob questions I've gotten well written answers from folks that genuinely want to help. So this is a little letter of thanks to everyone on this forum that makes this a learning/teaching environment. You guys/gals are great. Merry Christmas! |

Well said, I wouldn’t be where I am with out this place and MIMF. I’m far from an expert but I can make a functional guitar with little more than the information that has been generously shared here. It amazes me that people can patiently offer the volumes of information. |

Agreed on all counts. I spend a ridiculous amount of time reading the archives here. It’s a super valuable resource. I’m on a few Facebook groups and the discussions tend to rat hole and much too often information presented as fact is way off, but you don’t dare push back.  Happy holidays to all of you. This is the only Forum I frequent. Even though I have been building for a long time I always pick up great tips here. Years ago learned about radius dishes and go-bar decks here which are two of the (many) things that have taken my building to another level... I thank you all for the generosity of sharing your knowledge and experience. |

I have been here pretty much from it’s inception and have watched the evolution. The MMIF was the go to place at that time but this is for the most part the only site I frequent these days. I hope all the experienced builders currently posting continue to do so. I have been at this over 18 years and like Brad still pick up some good tips on a regular basis. There have not been any heated arguments here for quite a while and although they were entertaining I am glad things have stayed civil. Thanks for keeping it going Lance. |

I/ve learned a lot and shared a lot on this forum . I sincerely hope that it may have helped others . I find that when I latch on to an idea here , that I have to reconfigure it to suit my own building methods and tools at hand. I also spent a lot of time on another snooty classical guitar forum. But sadly, I had to hold my nose at the petty disagreements , egotism, snobbery, elitism, and a lack of a sense of humour that I left and have not posted |

I only ever come here to ask 'professional' questions too for the same reasons you mention. I think that was the original, and maybe still is, intent of the forum, a place for luthiers to talk shop. It's not like it hasn't had it's drama, after all anything that involves people does. Happy Christmas to you and Happy Holidays to all. |

I grump a lot around here, but the OLF is in my Top 5 forums visited multiple times per day. It's a community, and I would miss it a lot if it was gone. |
