Hi- I have found the Grellier L-00 plan online and the GAL L-00 plan (Kerry Char drawn) and was wondering if anyone had any preference to either of these or any comments about the plans? Are there any other plans for a L-00/HG-00 out there that you think is better? Any and all comments about building a vintage 30s style L-00/HG-00 would be welcome! Thanks guys and gals! |

Our molds and brace templates etc. (KMG) are digitized off the GAL L00 drawing which is very accurate since it was based off an actual guitar going through a restoration |

The L-00 was a very changeable beast over the years that it was manufactured, so it is impossible to say which set of plans is "most correct" Over the years 1929 to 1943 Gibson made L-00s that had 12 frets to the body, 13 frets, or 14 frets. The basic body shape was fairly consistent and all had x-bracing, but the body depth varied - especially in the Nick Lukas model, which was extra deep. Some had elevated fingerboards, a bit like an archtop. Timber used was mostly mahogany, but there were some rosewood ones also. Some were made as tenor guitars to try to win the business of cross-over banjo players. So, what you are going to do is make a guitar in the general style of a L-00. You will need to make some decisions about the characteristics that you want to have in your L-00. I have made three, and I love 'em. I have got the Grellier plan, and Ken's templates (which are good - thanks Ken). I built my own molds. You will probably end up putting together elements from multiple sources, and you can improvise a bit if you want. One of mine has a slotted headstock - which is very non-Gibson - but I just felt like doing it that way. |

Kerry Char is a fine builder and repairer. He did the GAL L-00 drawing, so I wouldn't hesitate to use it. The Grellier plan is free, though I might be inclined to support the GAL. Pat |

I've built 2 using the Grellier plans without issue. A side note, the Hiscox large classical case will just fit one. Kevin Looker |
