Post subject:  Laguna LT 20 BS/woodmaster CT blade
Hi I just bought a 12 yr old used laguna lt 20 BS with a dead motor. I will either fix the motor it or replace it . For those who own one of these machines which blade, and dealer would you recommend buying the blade from? and or a new motor ?? I believe this is a 2.2kw motor or 3 hp ??. Thanks bliss

What's the motor frame? It should be on the tag.

And 2.2 kw is 3hp.

The BS is horizontal at this time with no motor.. Have to right it to get serial number.l The specs say 5 hp but it could be an older BS with the 3 hp motor .Amazon sells leeson motors will start search there unless someone knows of other sellers

Leeson is a reputable name brand motor, no worries there.

I just asked about the frame spec because that will dictate mounting plate configuration, shaft diameter & length, etc.

agreed , the owner just dropped off the motor/accessories it/s a 3.6kw seimec italian motor.The insides are fried, it/s almost 5 hp. has 2 new capacitors.I read one article online that said that euro motors only run at 50 % efficiency ?? anyhow I contacted the laguna tech rep so will find out where to get a replacement motor. Yes Leeson is good

The motor was fried /baked whatever. I ordered all the new parts/motor from laguna to reconfigure the new leeson 5hp motor.The older original acm motor was rated at 3.6 kw or abt 4.8 hp. According to one thread I read was that these euro motors are only 50% efficient .Ordered the RK blade as well and I have a lot of wood to resaw. A few small items are needed rustoleum touch up paint.levelling bolts, truing the tires, diamond sanding the ceramic guides.A new male plug etc. The former owner said it would cost $650 to repair the burned out motor.Which IMHo is not worth it especially since it is not as efficient.

I bought a motor and ac vsd from these folks for my lathe.
Then I bought a 1.5 hp motor for my delta 14" to beef up my power for re-sawing green wood.

Please note that many European motors are designed for 50 Hz, not 60Hz as we have in North America. Without going into a lot of electrical theory, a 50 Hz motor plugged into a 60Hz source can literally cause a fire, and burn down your shop. You probably knew this already, but I feel the need to warn somebody out there who just wants to replace a motor with any old motor.

Exc p lincoln ,the acm-italian euro motor was 50-60 hz and the copper wiring was fried it was only 14 yrs old .I have 1.8 hp s-45 mininmax for 20 yrs .Never had a problem with the euro motor.

I believe you will be looking for a flange mounted motor, not face mounted or foot mounted.
prob 24mm shaft.
It might be a good idea to do some tests on it first though.
Is the caps bulging or any other signs of damage to them?
Capacitors can be bought for the price of a pint.
I have to check the windings on my 3 phase 2.2KW, ABB bandsaw motor as I nearly cooked it cutting till it stalled
on some reclaimed timber for a bench build.
I must get/make a tooth setter so this does not happen again (set was gone on one side because of contact with window putty)
Anyway I'm on the look out for the cheapest ohmmeter/megger/megohmmeter to do an insulation resistance test on the motor,
as I am doing this on a shoestring.
Happy to report back with my eBay search result when I find one suitable.
I got recommended one for about 30 or 40 quid, but I think that could be a bit steep.
Have you got other blades to test out the machine before the fancy CT ?

I was on the lookout today for an insulation resistance tester from the bay and amazon,
This is the cheapest one I could find (which also turned out to be the same one as I was recommended)
VICI VC60B Resistor Instrument Digital Insulation Tester Megohm Megger N9A2 , on eBay.

I take it I cant get the job done with any other type of megohmmeter,megger,ohmmeter,or anything else ?
This one costs £26:36 and £0:59 postage.

I'd love to know if I can get the job done a cheaper way.

I/m sure there are euro dealers for laguna an minimax I have a 20yr old SCMI minimax s-45 with a 1.8 hp euro motor. It is a great BS if you can get a used one They are well worth refurbishing. The motor/accessories have not been shipped yet. My tech rep has been away. Will have to wait for the shipment . I will do a youtube video .On all the upgrades I have done and how you can take a good used BS and make it serviceable for luthiery. Will have the wife post a link on the OLF. I/ve got a video on maintaining your Bs using a 12in jet as a demo. cheers ernie

Minimax in Europe goes under the Centauro name,
And Laguna machines ...The larger/older ones I believe to be made by ACM.
My saw is a ACM/Griggio STAR600/SNA600.
I hope my motor is ok :oops:
I would rather get a new Chinese VFD than these insulation testers as I allready have a fairly good multimeter.
I might try to fix it yet laughing6-hehe
I dont mind having another VFD anyway for tablesaw no2 or a cyclone in future.

I would test the motors capacitors, impedance, voltage output etc under load before using it . The 2002 laguna lt 20 was made by ACM in italy,Those shop dogs look puzzled !

Yes they certainly were Ernie,
They only seem to want to come in when I'm cutting something,
I had to catch them that time, as they were suspicious of me calling them in for a change
Most of the time they come in for a while with wet paws, and exit leaving funny brown paw prints everywhere all over the tarmac :roll:

I was hoping there was and old skool cheap way to do an insulation test on three phase motors.
It seems like there's nothing you can do maintenance wise, to be on the safe side.
I might as well get another Chinese VFD and keep testing it out

They are both Akitas 2 3/4 and 14 years.
We just got back from the Rory Gallagher fest, and basically spent all weekend repeating this....
Sound folk with burgers and stout keeps him goin like he was seven again.
He takes pride showing her the ropes

.Ireland is wet, cool , and damp,the dogs are happy to be inside. akita is a japanese breed .I/mguessing they have a reputation for being guard dogs. Good luck with repairing your motor tomas.Perhaps a local electric motor repair shop can advise how to test out those 3 phase motors . I have 0 experience with them
