Post subject:  Source for Honduran Mahogany Neck blanks

Hi folks, I wonder if you would be so kind to direct me to a good source of Honduran Mahogany neck blanks. I know of the usual, like Stew Mac and LMI, but curious about others. I would love some direction regarding solid heel or laminated heel. I see some blanks that require laminating the heel to thickness. Any stalwarts out there that have strong opinions regarding tonal differences between the two?

Thanks all!

I've had good luck with OLF sponsor RC's bandsawn Honduran neck blanks.

Josh at Canadian Luthiers Supply had some. I believe he is affiliated with one of our US sponsors and that's where his product comes from. Maybe he will chime in.

Same here. Hibdon has sent me good stuff.

Really, it is worth looking at the websites for all of the OLF sponsors to see what they have. Some carry neck woods, some don't.

Hibdon is the place to go! I am the Canadian distributor for their wood, but you can buy directly from them if you are in the US.

I usually buy dimensional lumber from a local supplier and take it from there. When I last bought from them, they had huge stacks of large board h. Mahogany. I went there last month to replenish my stock. They had none. The salesman said they couldn't get quality stuff anymore.

I went on line and ordered a board from Gilmer wood. It is hard to judge on line but it turned out to be very nice, quarter sawn piece of h.mahog, big enough for 4 blanks.

No tonal difference. A laminated heel and scarf joint save material and is more efficient, but take a little more work. Not to mention, stronger if done right.

So true what Pat says. I bought one blank large enough to cut two necks out of way back when. Been stacking heels and scarfing heads every since.
