Anyone here bid on ShopGoodwill.com?

I'd been bidding on a very beat up old Gibson Mandobass, and finally dropped out last Friday.
It just finished about an hour ago at $2500 plus.

No telling how much work it was going to need, but when was the last time anyone on this forum laid eyes on one in the flesh? All I have ever seen is pictures.

I've poked around there a bit, but never bought anything. My wife is the thrifter in our house. She's been at it since before I met her (back when people commuted by covered wagon) and brings home true museum quality items on a semi-regular basis. She's a genius at it. Anyway, those old mandobasses are cool and rare as hen's teeth. There was an article in Guitar Aficionado a while back about Eddie Van Halen having one, so ... well, there you go.

I've looked too and concluded that there aint no deals there and prices seem to get driven up.

As with any marketplace, it helps to have sharp eyes and be a savvy shopper.

I purchased a Yamaha "Strat" a couple weeks ago for $58, shipping was $20. Why did I do that?

To get the excellent Warmoth Explorer neck... which I will sell on eBay for a very nice profit, plus have the quite decent Yamaha body and hardware to gut and sell, too.

I watched a pre-war Maurer archtop (built by the Larsen Brothers) go for over $8000 a couple months ago. You have to wade through all the crap, look in all the corners and listings - but the patient will be rewarded.

2.5K is not crazy for a mandobass.
8K is not crazy for a Larson, especially an archtop.

It is when it needs thousands of dollars of work. I stopped bidding at a grand.

And I never said the price on the Maurer was crazy.

Amy Hopkins had a restoration thread of a mandobass over on the MIMF. It was years ago, but it's probably in one of the archives.
