| Post subject: | Bocote glue suggestions? |
Hi fellows, I'll be gluing a Bocote board to Mahogany soon. Anyone have trouble using Titebond 1? Should I use Epoxy? Should I sand and glue? Wipe with a solvent first? The internet is a confusing place full of conflicting advice. Thanks! Dan |

Ive used bocote. Never occurred to me to use anything but TB. No problems that I'm aware of. |

The first guitar I built in 1991 was with Bocote using Titebond. Still have that guitar and as awful as it looks it's still held together just fine. Sand or plane the joints and glue them up and don't worry about it. |

The wood-database says Bocote has a waxy/oily surface. They recommend a rag and solvent as well as sanding to roughen the surface. I use TB1 on rosewood after rubbing the glueing surface with acetone. |

The bocote I've had in my shop definitely does feel a bit waxy but I've used HHG (joining plates, bracing), TB1 (binding), and CA (rosettes) without any special prep-just a fresh, well-made joint-and haven't had any issues. Edit: oh, and Unibond for laminating sides, too. Not really relevant to the OP's project but I'll say this much: As much as I like the way it looks, I probably won't build another acoustic guitar with it. It's very heavy and, in my opinion, doesn't contribute much to the sound. Taps like cardboard. Will stick to using it exclusively for decorative purposes. |
