I have used the 1/4" hollow tubes and also the 1/8" x 3/8" bars. I prefer the bars to the tubes but to be honest I am not using them anymore. I would probably use some if I had a neck that was too flexible but I feel that the two-way Martin truss rods I use now are sufficient.
