Post subject:  What Did You Get Done This Weekend/Week? (Fed 29-Mar 6)

I've spent a good deal of time poring through the archives here, and my favorite threads always seem to be the 'What Did You Do This Weekend?' ones...besides the sense of progress, there are often those little human interest stories outside of luthierie. There seems to have been fewer of these threads in the last year or two, so it seemed time to resurrect the practice in the hopes of drawing some of the less frequent posters into the discussion.

I don't have an incredibly interesting, or thoroughly unlikely story to convey, or progress to claim on a particular project, but I did have a very long, rather nice Saturday in the shop working on a range of nice instruments. I made up a new saddle for a Froggy Bottom wide-waisted jumbo (a very Martin-like guitar in appearance, but shaped and braced like an older J-45), sanded and buffed out a Tellier guitar with some finish issues, and spent over four hours on a job that I estimated at about 1.2 hours (buffing out a satin-finished Epiphone Les Paul faded red guitar). Oops!

I would very much enjoy hearing how others spent their week or weekend in the shop (or out) - please share!

I spent the weekend indoors in a Lazy Boy. Sleeping in it at night. I slipped on the ice and fractured 5 ribs. Don't ever fall and beak your ribs. You won't like it. I did make one trip out to the shop to fill the humidifier and look at a build waiting for binding.

I started three necks. Got the tenons and the shelf for the neck extension cut and started fitting truss rods. One of these will make it to the Hesh fretting class in June.

Victor, broken ribs suck. Hope yours heal quickly.

I spent part of Saturday playing plumber and changing out a bathroom faucet. I hate changing faucets, especially inside small vanities. I was able to get down to the shop and make some progress on my old Martin 0-16NY; I'm working my way through a bridge reglue (done), crack repairs (done), neck reset(pending) and refret(this one is going to Ann Arbor for Hesh and David's class). Also got some work done on the East TN Luthiers Guild project guitar - getting the binding put on a box where the sides are decidedly not square gaah. Had to do a lot of hand work on the binding/purfling channels and fix a router goober but now I can just glue on the bindings (whew). Got a new size 0 that just needs a bridge and setup, sure would like to get to that one, not to mention the 13 fret 000 walnut cutaway sitting in the drying box that's also on the home stretch.

Finished applying Royal-lac and am starting to put this quilted mahogany ukulele together. I need to wait a bit before sanding and polishing. Should have the bridge on this week.

Scraped bindings for a commissioned guitar I started in January. Spent most of Sunday working on various studio mic combos and placements for some demo videos I'm going to be shooting soon.

Hope you heal fast!

I made a set of solid linings, glued up a heel and neck block, and had a great time seeing my old friend and his band, Enter the Haggis, and having some time to hang out with him!ImageImageImageImage

Mainly worked on then neck for my latest guitar. Got a good start on carving it, cut a pearl logo and inlaid it into the headplate, glued the headplate and b/w/b veneers onto the headstock, and shaped the headstock.

Started watching the new season of House of Cards.

Routed the truss rod slots and glued up the fretboard extension supports on two Parlours I'm building and built a simple shelf to store the x-Carve CNC I've been playing with...

We finished up my boys Pinewood derby cars for Cub Scouts. We also made a boot/shoe rack for a scout project. Now I can get back to my next build after cleaning up the mess from this winter.

Used this for the first time to slot a couple of boards.
Sure easier than hand slotting, especially on ABW... (This one's EIR)

Remember the binding/purfling disaster? Well I finally got some finish in it and took it to a classical guitar festival this weekend. It's a one day French polish job, not quite completed.

Modified my fret-slotting sled to cut multi-scale (fan fret) fingerboards. Stretched a piece of monofilament fishing line on the sled over the saw blade, taped a reverse image of the fretfind2 template on the bottom of the board, added a couple pieces of P120 sandpaper to keep the board from slipping, line up the fishing line carefully over the fret position, hold down and run it through. Reposition fingerboard and repeat. Worked a treat! ImageImageImageImage

I love these threads. Such a talented lot and wonderful work...... accept Colin. Ouch brother! That's a keeper that sliver.

I don't know how to get photos from my android phone to a Mac but I was here last weekend http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http ... 65qFdTdSw=.

Doing this https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater. That was posted on Mario's FB site.

My friend had a sawmill that he has since sold but still had a few chunks lying around. He asked me a while back to do a guitar for him and brought over enough Curly Maple he had cut, to build a couple of guitars. He told me of this big piece he had left and I was interested in some for neck blanks. One for his guitar at least. Maybe a couple for the stash. So my wife and I drove to the beginning of highway 101, Lund BC. That's where you get the water taxi to Savary Island.

It turned out to be a 24"x 24" x about 7' chunk. Unfortunately it has a small amount of spalt but so does his back and sides so that's ok. They are from the same tree.
We took a couple slabs off with an Alaskan Sawmill and turned them into 5x5's. Enough for a few necks. I really enjoy going from tree to finished product.

Pretty fun day all around. Savary Island is a very cool island. The beaches are amazing as well as the forests. There are 100's of houses from shacks to multi million $ pads yet no power. If you ever find yourself in Vancouver, try and cut your visit in that big smoke a little short and catch a couple ferries north to my neck of the woods. You won't be disappointed.

Cheers!

Danny, your FB must be locked down good, I can't open that link. Danny, email the pictures from your phone to your mac...

I agree, some awesome stuff going on, I too love these threads.

Here's what I did the last few days.

Started to rough carve this neck before getting it set to the body.

But I want to get the binding done on the body before cutting the mortise. Here's the body,

And I couldn't do the binding till I got my new binding jig from Canadian Luthier Supply and installed my router.

Which is done so I'm hoping this week I'll get the binding all done, so I can cut the mortise out and fit the neck so I can attach the fretboard and final shape so I can send it off for finishing.

8-)

Oh, and I did a neck reset on this and did a new set up too. Ready to go back to the owner.
