Imagegrinding down one clean surface. I was a little afraid that the bleach look would penetrate, but a quick surface sand brought out some wonderful purplish hues, and the greys and browns I like so much in walnut. Definitely the nicest walnut I had in a very long time. Actually has a bit of ringing tap tone too.

Sadly, I think the black lines have to go, as they are leftover from the bark. I have half a mind to saturate them with thin CA to see if they'll be stable enough. Sure would look sharp, but it seems improbable...

I just happy hat the saw works well. There are a lot of things I don't like about the saw, but that's another thread...:)

Thanks for posting all the pictures Ed, and glad to see that the saw is working well for you. You have peaked my interest with what you don't like about the saw. I'm still thinking about a large bandsaw sometime and this was one I was considering. I'll wait for your other thread.

Beautiful! Nice work processing it too. I love to see rough-sawn wood get all cleaned up and ready to use. I wish I could do that.

I'm not sure if thousand cankers disease has made an appearance in Canada yet or not. I just heard a talk from the Missouri Department of Conservation about the disease and it was pretty frightening. It is killing off eastern black walnut; once it is in an area, the trees are eventually screwed.
further, once a state is known to be infected many other states will not allow walnut to come in from there.

The biggest thing to prevent the spread, according to the lecturer, is to not move walnut with bark attached. Did this tree come from your area? It might be a good idea to burn the bark just in case. Like I said, I don't know if this has reached Canada or not. Probably mentioning it for nothing. . .

Hi Josh,

I probably won't start another thread. Just venting I guess. What I love about it is the power in the small foot print. It's barely larger than my old 1hp General, but 14" resaw capacity and 3hp motor. Cleared through the walnut like nothing. I expect denser woods to require more effort. The Resaw King blade works as advertised, though the real life kerf is closer to .060. Good quality machine, and it feels like it.

Here's what I don't like.

I don't like the ceramic guides nearly as much as I wanted too. The top one is ok, cause you can reach it. The bottom one you really can't. It's got thumbscrew adjusters that you're supposed to be able to adjust thought the blade insert about 3" under the table. They really should have made them wrench adjustable, because they are really hard to fiddle with.

Secondly, the trunion clamps are too small, around the size of an old silver dollar.. And they need to be cinced HARD, cause the gas table adjuster thing is very strong. Fortunately they can come off, so I will either replace them with much larger knobs, or build a special wrench to turn them.

Lastly, there is something going on that gives me cognitive dissonance. The table appears dead flat across and along with a straight edge. Yet, when I get the table square to the inside of the blade, then check the other side, the other side is not square. If I square it with the outside, the inside goes out of square. Does not compute. So, we ended up squaring the fence with the inside of the blade to make the cuts, and it worked out ok.

Bryan, it came from Windsor Plywood, beyond that, I don't know. I'll look into that disease for sure.

Nice work. I love everything about walnut. But what the heck do you do to the exposure or color balance in your photos? Extra vaseline on the lens?

We used to have a Windsor plywood here in Kelowna and I had found that they were double or triple the cost of buying from a wholesaler.You have many wood dealers in Vancouver that could supply a similar product.

Yeah, Windsor is pricey. But we couldn't pass this board up. Finding quartered walnut is very difficult. Let alone with sapwood...

I've got a couple nice hunks I'm itching to use.
I think Walnut is one of the prettiest woods.
Sure wish I had a fancy sander like yours!

iPads and phone cameras get oil from fingers on them pretty easily. Could just be a dirty lens.
