We loaded a 40' container in Nairobi, Kenya on Dec 31 with tools, machines, materials, instruments, and absolutely everything Suzanne and I own, and wondered when we would see it again! Ship tied up at Montreal port on Wednesday, we cleared Customs on Thursday, the container released from the port on Friday and delivered to roadside at our new place on Mont Shefford, Québec. It then snowed overnight and throughout Saturday morning -- the 5-man unpacking crew had to wait for the plow before they could get their truck up the hill. Bienvenue au Québec! It was a 13-hour task to unload, carry to the house, place on one of 4 floors, unwrap and assemble. The big bandsaw was cursed royally, but they managed to get in place. Everyone was exhausted. I would start organizing the new lutherie studio, but I'm scheduled for shoulder replacement surgery on Wednesday. At least everything is finally here and undamaged -- even the 7 guitars! |

They said my shoulder was truly "used up", but they were able to use a prothesis configured like a regular joint, so best likelihood of good result. I'm looking forward to planing my plates again, but have some pain and physio ahead of me first. May have to look at dictation software, as my left thumb is pretty slow! I remember you posting when you got to Kenya (here or somewhere else?). Time sure goes fast! Welcome back!! Best of luck with the recovery. I'm scheduled for a full shoulder joint replacement next month and am not looking forward to it. |

Yes, we thought we'd be longer than two years in Kenya, but things weren't going as well as hoped, so we took the opportunity to come "home" after 16 years in various foreign countries. Learned guitar making in New Zealand, did a pile of repair work in Nairobi, now looking forward to a new era of lutherie in Québec -- once this wretched shoulder is sorted. Good luck with your shoulder replacement, Steve. Indeed, not the kind of surgery to look forward to, but I'll be very happy if the result is good in the long run. Meanwhile, I'll just enjoy these mood-enhancing pain killers they gave me. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Shoulder replacement surgery done, and 2 months later I seem to be back at work 100%. Processed wood inventory now under humidity control in machine room. Attachment: RH control of processed wood.jpg Demolition of drywall to install doors to separate shop from rest of house ... ready for framing. Attachment: door opening.jpg Job the past couple of days was installation of shop lighting. Tomorrow, we pull the cable for the machine circuits and begin to assemble stuff. A couple of guitars in for repair and set up. Attachment: Workshop lighting.jpg
