Hey there,

I just moved to Madison and was wondering if there is anyone living in the area that could tell me a little about sources for supplies
or anything else I should know about!!

Thanks!

What part of town are you in? I'm on the near west side.
Whacha looking for in terms of supplies. Lumber pretty much sucks in the area. But sometimes you can find some gems in the lumber yards. There's a fellow in Wallworth that has some pretty nice lumber. Mahogany, walnut, maple, etc. Badger Hardwoods is his business.

I miss Madison. Even the winters (Kites on Ice, iceboating, good beer to warm up with afterwards).

Go to Spruce Tree Music, which is on one of the main east-west one-way streets through downtown. Get to know Will and Judy there. They have a great shop and do a lot of repairs. They may well be willing to point you to local sources of materials - perhaps even supply some themselves. http://www.sprucetreemusic.com

Yep all the way from endless summer to the polar vortex..
Couple years here so the lady can attend Madison technical collage.
Then who knows were. I do enjoy the cheaper cost of living here.

I am looking for anything useful to guitar building in the area, especially a good source to buy wood.
I assumed with all of the trees up here there would be plenty of native woods at good prices.
San Diego had no trees within 100s of miles but there were some really nice suppliers in the area.

I am just off the Beltlline and Seminole Hwy southwest Madison. Walworth is about an hour from here, guess I could make the trip when I need some wood.

Thanks for the response!

Sorry to change the subject, but across the street from Spruce Tree is an old Taxi garage owned by Richard Munz. Street rod fans might recognize the name. It's not open to the public, but if you happen by when he is out waxing his 1940 Ford Woodie, strike up a conversation and he'll invite you in. It's a museum of American street rods of the 50's and 60's.

Greetings from Wisconsin. I live over in La Crosse, west of you. The only real place I've found wood around here is local loggers or Menards stores. You have a bunch of them around you. Sometimes you can find some nice mahogany and curly maple boards if you dig through the stacks. Jason

Due to the fact I'm scared of wolves since I got old I never go north of Nashville anymore. Gets to cold up there for my liking. Hope you get settled in good though. Sounds like you have friends up there already.

You are quite close to Madison Music. It's on the frontage road at Seminole (on the West Side). They've got some amazing instruments there. Lane's is upstairs. Stop up and say hi. He's a great repair/restore guy. Tell him I sent you (and he might throw you out right away).

If you are up for a day trip, visit Dave's Guitar shop in La Crosse. I haven't been there in 20 years, but it was a favorite road trip when I was in college in MN. Word on the street is its better than it was when I was there.

You could also look up Jason.

Here are my two tips of the day. Won't share these secrets again.

Cream City Music in Milwaukee did a huge Martin parts buyout about 7 years ago. Tons of wood, parts and accessories for unbelievably cheap prices. I don't know what is left, but if I was in the area Iw ould definitely stop by to see what they got.

Vikwood.com supplies some HUGE guitar manufacturers with tonewood and they are local to you.
Great service even for the little guy buying one or two sets at a time!

Enjoy

Dave

Thanks for all of the tips guys!! I am settling in well. lots of friends and family here so that makes it easier. I do have some folks in Milwaukee ill be checking out Cream City Music!!! cant wait for that!!! Thanks Dave! Vikwood is a bit of a hike but might also be worth the trip. I tried to go to Spruce tree yesterday though I didn't check their hours and they weren't open yet.. but peeking in that place looks really cool. I did check out Madison Music and lane wasn't in. They have some pretty sweet guitars there!!!! Ill be sure to have him thow me out when im there though!! hahahah

One place to supply yourself with Hamburgers is Dotty Dumpling's Dowry down near State Street. That place is the Bomb. I used to go there a lot for work, like every other week, and I'd hit this place at least twice per trip.

Try the Stanley's Blue Ribbon. *drool*

I'll bet that you could get a decent slice of Wisconsin cheese for that burger! [:Y:]

I have a cousin down in South Carolina. When he comes back to Wisconsin, he brings a cooler along and all his friends from the south give him money to bring back cheese curds. I can't imagine life without curds.

I lived in Madison for 15 years...best place ever! +1 for Spruce tree Music. They do amazing repair work and have lots of connections. It's actually Julie and Wil that own it.
Have fun while you're there. If we ever go back to WI, it will be to Madison :).

Its a Really nice town I have been enjoying myself. The down side is its getting cold soon. The upside Im going to be in Hawaii starting on the 29th for 5 weeks. The down side is its going to be freezing cold when I get back and I haven't been thru wintter for 12 years living in san diego. The upside is my garage came with a really nice gas heater mounted to the ceiling so thats going to be where I spend the winter.
