I just ran across this and thought I would share it with you all. It is a workbench made from an old Hamilton Electric Drafting table. This is the same drafting table I had when I worked at Steelcase and I can tell you it is very sturdy beast. It is quite heavy and does require an outlet but I can see where it would make a great bench. |

This is great! I learned the value of different work bench heights when I worked in a shop of workers who ranged in height from 4' 10" to 6' 4". I've set my shop up to have a variety of work bench heights, but I'm constantly having to move a project off the bench that's at the height I need. I better buy a few of these before the word gets out, and the price jumps up. |

This would be a great idea for not only carving which I do but when I am sanding and want something higher than what I have. I think I will start looking for one. It looks like "Brian" built his with 7 inch sides and I am wondering if the height of the sides could be reduced in the center of the long side pieces. This way I think it would fold up move vertically to be out of the way more. Just a thought Chuck |

Has anyone tried to make one of these carving benches? I am planning on trying it as soon as I can find the adjustable drafting table. I want to use it for carving, woodworking and as an off table for my planer and for work with building jigs and my first guitar. I have found a table but the owner says the tilt needs adjustment and I have looked over the internet to see if I can find any information about how to adjust the tilt so it will stay put. According to the table owner it does not stay in the tilt position well and again according to him he says it just needs to be adjusted but I can not find anything that suggests how one goes about adjusting it. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chuck |

It doesn't tilt, but my main 'work bench' goes from 13" - 48" tall and will lift 660 lbs. It's a hydraulic scissor lift cart with a 4' steel plate bolted on top of it (I weld on it). I inherited it from a very wise friend  It's pretty sweet being able to weld or work at any height, wheel it around the shop, and use it to ferry stuff around or load and unload really heavy stuff from a vehicle or the CNC. Bob, That is a pretty nice lift table. I am keeping my eyes open for something similar that I can pick up cheap or free. I tore my rotator cuff a few years ago and had surgery on it but it has never been 100% since. I have come up with some pretty creative ways to move things but one of those would be nice. @Chuck. Where I use to work I had one of those drafting tables that I used all the time. It started to rock about 1/4" when it was locked in place and I called maintenance to see if it was repairable and he took about 2 minutes to fix it. He said it was a little like a clutch and had pads that locked it in place. I think he just adjusted a bolt or something and it didn't rock anymore. If you can pick one up cheap I would say go for it. They are really sturdy and also heavy. Cheers, Bob |

One of those tables turned up on our local Craigslist last week, complete with a Vemco machine for $150. I just didn't have the room for it and nearly wept as I posted it to our local luthiers group. At least one of our guys got it. Pat |

Just picked one of the adjustable drafting tables up for less than 100 dollars. I took the adjustable legs off of it and put casters on it with brakes. Now I can move it around and use it for more than one thing. Now to find some hardwood to make the top and buy the vises I want. Chuck |
