Anyone ever tried that? I did a fade test years ago on a piece of spruce. Stained both faces with red food coloring, then divided it into 8 sections, and cleared one side with TruOil, nitrocellulose lacquer, acrylic lacquer, polyurethane, Watco oil, CA, shellac, and one square unfinished. Taped the finished side to a southern facing window and left it for a couple years. Anyone care to guess which finish faded the most, as compared to the unfinished side which was shaded? |

One dollar Bob. I'd guess acrylic nitro since it is usually very clear. I just spent $20 for a bottle of transtint so I wanna know about food coloring. |

I'll stick to Trans-Tint. One bottle makes a lot of dye and it's colorfast. |

When I peeled off the tape - the true vivid red was revealed. All of it faded - some more, some less. It might have been different with another color - blue, maybe. But red fades really easily in the sun. |

There was a great (long) article in the Big Red Book 6 P 368 "Constructing the Spanish Rosette by Eugene Clark. He gave a lot of detail on how he dyes his veneers (and it's far from an exact science the way he describes it) and talks about needing a mordant with some colors to colorfast. This may not be the same thing as uv-induced fading, but your post brought it to mind, so I thought I'd mention the article…lots of good detail. |
