I just got accepted to the Lincoln College's guitarmaking program. Not sure what to expect but I was told by the interviewer that it will be mostly hand tool. Wish me luck on this because I will need to do something about my machines, and a lot of other things too... the program starts in September.

Best of luck Tai, sympathize with the machinery.
I've just bought a set of plans from one of teachers there, James Lister, for my first classical build. http://www.jameslisterguitars.co.uk/ListerGuitars/GuitarPlans.html
Quite impressed with the look of them.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

You need to take a very big hammer to them. That college is also known as The College of the Lincoln Luddites.

laughing6-hehe You'll probably come back a devout clog wearing hand tool convert!

Good for you, Tai! Don't worry about the amount of hand tool use. You'll be able to apply much of what you learn to power tool use, with the added bonus of learning to "read" wood much better than if you used power tools alone. Best of luck, and remember to keep us up to date!

Alex

Excellent! Congrats! I don't think there's a better investment than one's education.

Are the courses only in England?

Well, I can't do courses in the US, I don't know much about Australia (I'm not even sure I want to go there... just about any animal is poisonous there), so for now all I can see is UK. There isn't anyone offering any serious luthier courses in Taiwan.

That's cool. More power to you man. It must be a big change to go to uk for a year! I looked around where I lived but you have to know German fairly well. While I am fluent, I am just not fast enough in the language yet to go to school with technical terms. They do have a lot of schools for violin making around here though.

I'm told European luthiers tend to be traditional, probably not a bad thing because perhaps I can attract clients who are more affluent...

I don't know... I do not know Korean and after being in Asia for so long, I'd like to get out for a change. Though I'd love to stop by Germany sometimes and look at your giant bandsaw...
