Had a visite from Tom Schotland ,who is working with Chuck Erikson, AKA The Duke of Pearl on new non wild life inlay materials. Amazing stuff!!! With ever increasing restrictions on natural shell, these new inlay materials will be in world wide use very soon . These are the newest sheets tom has developed.

Michael: Thanks for posting these. Good info. Please let us know if you have any more info or developments. When I first opened the thread I thought they were a bit over the top, but it quickly became obvious that some of these will work nicely. We just have to get use to change, one of the hardest thing to do with some of us humans. Traditions are hard to break, but considering the bans I think these are on the right track. Thanks again and take care.
Tom

I remember this post years ago, and there was something weird about it.

Those are really beautiful and unique... if they work half as good as they look they should be very successful

For the web google The Duke of Pearl and you will gets Chuck's web site. I have seen these product samples at A.S.I.A. last June and they are very nice. None of this is on Chuck's web yet.

I wonder how they look when cut into little thin lines? If they are plastic I also wonder about their stability over time. There is a lot of crappy looking celluloid out there. Shell has a natural beauty and much of it is a by product of the seafood industry. Having alternatives to natural shell is a good thing, but I would hate to see it banned entirely.

I am the developer of these materials. We have just had our first small production runs of them, if anyone is interested please PM me and I can go over details of the materials, pricing and availability. There is an order backlog at this time. The long term plan is to scale up production and offer them for sale on the Duke of Pearl's website, which is currently undergoing a complete rebuild offline.

With regard to long term stability, the materials are made using optical grade polymers and adhesives with excellent non-yellowing properties. With regard to cutting into thin lines, I have seen work done with strips as narrow as .040" that looked great.
