So I have this very old, very ugly, very weak buffer grinder setup that I inherited from my grandfather. I'd like to leave most everything the same, but lengthen the arbors and add larger buffing wheels/remove grind stone. I figure the 1/3 HP ancient motor should be fine right? If it can push a grindstone (as long as you don't apply too much pressure) it should be fine for buffing. Where can I find longer arbors to fit this thing? Pictures to follow from tapatalk because posting photos any other way is a PITA. |

Maybe you could find a coupling nut and add some all thread extensions to the existing arbors. Then if you find it doesn't work out it wouldn't take much to change it back. Prices on coupling nuts (and most hardware) vary quite a lot depending on vendor, so be sure to shop around. |

You might fine 1/3hp a little light. When I first built my buffer that is what I used, and was not able to get a decent buff going without stopping the motor. I recently swapped it out with the 3/4hp motor from SM and now it works great! (curiously, it was cheaper to get the motor shipped here from SM than from my local furnace motor suppliers....go figure....) |

Before you spend too much money on that arbor, take a look at the Grizzly Buffing arbor- $100. [urlhttp://www.grizzly.com/products/W1681][/url] I'm using several of my Grandfathers tools as well, but I think the 5/8" shaft size on those bearings is going to severely limit your options. |
