I have a Madagascar Rosewood fingerboard that I'm considering for my next build. I notice that the grain is rather open. Is it common practice to fill the pores on a rosewood fingerboard? If so, what is used to fill the pores? Thanks.

I would leave the pores open, I like the feel of open pore Rosewood fret boards while I am playing. Oiled with some lemon oil or fret board oil or they look great.

Fret board pores are usually filled with finger grease by the player.

Filling the fingerboard sounds like something that should be avoided. With no finish to hold it in place plus constant finger contact it could only lead to troubles

I think the consensus is that fret boards usually do not get filled however I have repaired a few pretty old guitars with dry grainy boards by spreading some thinned Titebond glue on them and then sand it. You do have to be careful because it will make those spots stand out because they are smooth. I will usually use a damp toothbrush to pull some of it out if I filled too much.

I made six guitars with Mad Rosewood. And then LMII went permanently out of stock  They look excellent without pore filling. Just a bit of fretboard conditioner and you are fine.

linseed oil thinned with mineral spirits or naptha and then buffed is routinely done by CL gtr makers.
