So I made a run over the mountain today to buy some Everclear in TN, and all they had was Graves (apropos name). Has anyone used this brand as an alternative to Everclear? If so, is it comparable, or should I expand my search into the next county for the real deal. The Graves is 190 proof...

I would think that would be close enough.

I don't think brand matters if it's 190 proof. I use Diesel.

The off brand might not taste as good. I use the least expensive I can get. Here in Virginia, they only seem to stock the Everclear. I've never noticed any difference among different brands. It's all 95% ethyl alcohol.

Hi Ken - I used it to French polish my last bouzouki. It worked fine, and it'll get you just as drunk as Everclear will! Just curious, can you not buy PGA in NC?

Thanks for the replies, y'all. I figured both being 190 proof, there couldn't be a whole lot of difference.

Goodin -- we could up until a couple of years ago. Now we can only get the lower octane stuff. We're pretty close to both Tennessee and South Carolina here, so it's not a big deal. I go to both states regularly.

Well that's a bummer. Funny that you can buy wine in a gas station in NC but not PGA anywhere. No wine in gas stations in TN but PGA is available. Actually there are three moonshine (legal) distilleries recently opened in Gatlinburg. I'm considering using moonshine to French polish just for the heck of it. Wonder if it would work.

i was always under the belief that pure grain alcohol(or near pure) was used to produce smokable cocaine, aka "crack", and that is why it became outlawed in some areas. i haven't seen it(everclear, that is) around chicago since the early '90s....but, i'm not sure if it is available or not.

edit: i got really really ill on Everclear and Hawaiian Punch in college.....so i think even if it is on a shelf before my eyes, my brain blocks it out
