Our little group has grown to 70 members, of which there are approximately 20 core members who participate on a regular basis. Several months ago there was a suggestion that we start a build project so members wilt little-no experience could see "how it's done". It was decided that the group would build a D28 style Dread and upon completion auction/sell the guitar to the highest bidder. Proceeds would then be donated to a local charity, chosen by the participating members.
Woodcraft donated an EIRW back/side set that I then thinned. Martin Guitars, thru Bob Sutton, has donated a HD28V neck and end blocks and another member donated a top.
This past Sunday was the official start of our project D28 build. Greg Seigmund demonstrated bending on a Blues Creek bending machine. Everything went well and we ended up with 2 nicely bent sides. Next month we hope to glue end blocks and start bracing and kerfing.
I will try and upload a few pics from the meeting.

Fastest two hours in town, lots of fun.

I need to figure out how to post photos that aren't the size of wall murals.

Hate that I missed another one! I'll be back once things slow down again in the fall....

It's time for our October meeting. Don't forget it, 10-13 @ 2pm at the Knoxville Woodcraft. This month we hope to get our freshly bent sides kerfed and also start on top and back bracing. May be a bit overzealous with what will be accomplished, but we can hope.

I had a great time last month bending the sides. The fox style jig worked very well. Some of you may have noticed the rookie mistake we made, bending one side backward, so there was no bookmatch. Greg has rebent the one side and all is well now.

Donations of kerfing and brace material would be appreciated.

This is a cool project and it sounds like you guys are having fun doing it. Almost makes me want to move to Tennesee. Almost.

Kudzu you say? I understand Kudzu grows so fast, if you stand still in a patch of it, it will cover you in hours. To paraphrase the great Chief Brody, "You're gonna need a bigger goat!"
Or a whole herd of them to slow the problem down.

Linus, I think you might have an idea there. I have lunch with Mamie Minch, two weeks ago. She was the head repair person at RetroFret here in Brooklyn. Now she is starting her own shop. Anyway, once she gets the place going, I think she would be down with becoming part of a Brooklyn Luthiers group. She also knows a ton or build/ repair people in NY that might also be interested. I will mention it to her next time we speak.
