Post subject:  Herringbone?
I have a bunch of herringbone from a particular vendor and I'm finding that it is inconsistent, both in with and in the herringbone pattern itself.
where are you buying your hearing bone from and would you consider to be the best source for it?

Don: I like the look of herringbone so use it almost exclusively. Have only used LMI stock and find it reasonably consistent, but even at that I have to mix and match to get the proper match at the center joint position. I'm not sure how much your stock varies but I find even a small variation of a few thou in width will show and of course one has to be careful to also match pattern. Think a certain amount of this is to be expected considering the product and how it is made. Guess what I'm saying is that I seem to be able to manage with a bit of work.

Tom. have you ever tried gluing in a small center block of contrasting veneers and abutting the herringbone up to that on either side ? Even a single black block ?

Any minute discrepancy in the herringbone pattern would be unnoticeable.

I always feel that butt joints in any field of endeavor, be it architectural or luthierial, benefit from having an intermediate separation. Much like the end graft in the sides at the end block. Nobody can get a perfect grain match on a butt joint at this location (unless your name is Howard Klepper, of course ...) ... beehive

Murray : Never thought of doing that, I do mostly dreads in traditional style and tend to stick to convention. But I'm sure that would work a treat for folks inclined.

High Mtn has very nice Herringbone. I'm not sure who makes it but I think it looks as good as it gets. His wood can be pretty nice too. [:Y:] Mmmmmm, silky

Perhaps that's my issue - that I'm expecting perfection or close to it. It does make it more difficult when you're cutting a specific depth of binding ledge and two pieces of herringbone that are matched as far as their pattern is concerned turn out to have different widths. Or, two pieces that are the same with are impossible to match due to the shifting pattern. Icant forces us to buy a lot more pieces then we may need in order to be able to have a reasonable match for both the ledge width, and the pattern match.
