I know this was discussed in a recent thread, but I am still confused. I know I need a tapered hole for my bridge pins, but what angle do I need?

Last year, I bought a Stew Mac Standard reamer, which according to their web site, has an angle of 2 degrees. This one works for violin tuning pegs and end pins. I noticed they also have two reamers for bridge pins, one at 3 degrees and one at 5 degrees.

I would prefer to have things match perfectly, but what angle reamer do I need? Is one taper more common than the other? Any help much appreciated!

IIRC, Martin uses a 5 deg taper. Sometimes the ball end on the end of the string has a tight fit using this taper so some custom builders use a 3 deg taper (maybe not the only reason). So I think the 5 deg is more common likely because it was the Martin standard.

Hopefully I don't have the two tapers reversed <smile>.
