So, I've got an old friend from school is asking me about an acoustic bass guitar. I googled it some. Watched some YouTube videos and came away impressed. May want to tackle this. He wants a five string fretless. Possible tree of life inlay on finger board. I've seen some models but what strikes me is the relative low price of these things. Why is that? Am I looking in the wrong place? Sounds like a "demand" problem. Also, can anyone point me toward some good plans? I do not mind spending money there. And I almost always modify.

Hi,

I've been planning to try one of R.M Mottola's designs, the Tinozza... see http://liutaiomottola.com/instruments.htm

You can download these directly from the site, in CAD or .pdf forms for printing. I've modified the body design to take a Martin neck, just haven't yet found back and sides wood big enough yet. He has several designs for ABGs and uprights so you might find something to your taste.

Cheers,
Alan

If I ever build an acoustic bass guitar, I'll model it on a Tacoma Thunderchief. A very well thought of bass, usually at or near the top when the subject comes up.

You might enjoy this build.

Arch tops are out. I just want a basic flat top design. But thanks so far for the ideas!

Keep in mind that especially with a fretless acoustic that he'll need to plug in or use a pick to be heard acoustically when played with other guitars.

Hi Mike

I just finished a Mark Stanley ABG. He has plans available on ebay. It's 4 string so not exactly what you are looking for, but maybe you could modify it. The plans are pretty good and Mr. Stanley is good at answering questions. It's a very big instrument and finding a case is still a problem for me. I used an L R Baggs element on-board pickup. Because I think it needs a pick-up, I probably won't build another one this size. If you post your build -I'll be watching. - mike
