Well I was sanding the neck that goes with this body ![]() and I noticed that on the endgrain areas, it looks like there are resins coming up or something. I've heard of something like this happening with spanish cedar, but is this something that also happens with mahogany on occasion? I pore filled with eggwhites and the finish is KTM-9. Does anyone know what happened and any ways to fix it (preferably without stripping the finish) ![]() ![]() |

I have seen this from using CA on Mahogany. If you have not used it possibly your supplier may have to stabilize a crack. CA will often run through the pores sealing the wood in that area making finishing difficult to hide the glue print. You can try using a toner to hide it In 12 years I have not ever seen this without a CA contamination . |

This looks similar to what's happened to me using tung oil on mahogany. It's usually from a pore that soaks up more oil than what gets on the surface, and then it bleeds back out. I'd guess those spots didn't quite get filled all the way. |

Looks like the extractive bleeding I've seen on lots of Spanish Cedar. What species of mahogany is it? How hot are you getting it while sanding? Could it be Spanish cedar, which is a true mahogany after all. If it is sap bleed a good cleaning with alcohol will usually remove it. |

I don't know but it looks to be happening in to many spots to be CA contamination unless they used it for multiple cracks and I don't see that. It may be the egg wash. Maybe a compatibility issue with the KTM-9 and egg whites. |

I've worked with quite a bit of Spanish cedar and this is definitely not SC. The grain and pore structures are different and it didn't have the horrible smell/taste that SC has. |

BTW, I ended up stripping the finish and doing a refin on the neck. |

Steve Kinnaird wrote: And now our curiosity is aroused! Pics please. And report--how did it turn out? Way to hang in there, Steve I have about 10 coats of KTM-9 on it and so far it looks good: I'll post some pics after it dries. I'm really hoping it works out. |

It looks to me like that mahogany is sad and it's just crying a little. Maybe take it outside to play a bit and it will cheer up and stop crying. ![]() |

This problem is likely from mahogany harvested from young immature trees. Probably sourced from plantation grown trees that are less than 30 years old. |

Hey! SC smells awesome! ![]() I would not make a neck out it because of that tendency to make sap. But you would know if was because of that wonderful scent! ![]() Did you use any oils on it? Mike |

I simply refinished the areas that had the problem and blended the new and old finished: it worked well ![]() ![]() |
