These are the practice sides from LMI, but arrived unmarked. Any idea of the species? Just want to know for reference when bending.

I'd guess Indian Laurel or Wenge, but they don't seem splintery enough for Wenge.

I think Laurel is a good guess, I wouldn't have thought that but when you said it it seems right on. I would say definitely not Wenge.

I can't help, but I do sympathize. I wish LMI would id their practice sides - without knowing what you are bending, the practice is not as useful,

The grain looks really swirly. It looks kinda like mahogany/sapele. Or maybe even Ovangkol.
I agree it would be nice if they would label them for future reference.

LMI has recently started selling some Peruvian woods. Manchinga is one of them. It can have a beautiful spalted figure when it's spalted. It's rather plain when it's not. I'd say that is some unspalted manchinga.

Hi Laurie-

Those sides look like some flat-sawn Black Limba boards I have - but not exactly. They do look exactly like some Doussie back and sides that I bought from uncle Bob Cefalu and son.

I bought some practice sides from LMI a while back and I think they were cutting Ovangkol at the time. I really don't remember what they look like though. If you call LMI, they can tell you what you have.

And the winner is.....Sucapira.....Thanks to Chris from LMI for the confirmation.

I think I'll just use them to work on my side bending procedure for my fox bender, since I've always used a hot pipe. LMI won't be carrying the wood, so don't go looking for it!
