Multi-Laminated Necks glued up with Epoxy + Carbon Fiber Rods + Truss Rod = Overkill?

Your thoughts?

I don't kow if it is overkill but when I was at a Benedetto workshop that is what he was doing on his laminated necks.

Overkill: no.

Overkill for a ukulele, yes, but not for a SS guitar. You'll want to do it right to make sure you never have to work on the neck during your lifetime, right?

Cheers,

My necks have never suffered for it...

If you want super thin profile neck, then this would be a good setup, but I suspect this would be a guitar sold to Asians or small people, as no one else would be able to play it without fatigue.

For normal neck profiles, I am not sure why it's even necessary... millions of steel string guitars are made without lamination or reinforcement (and use less than quartered wood to cut cost) and they haven't had any problems. If this were a 5 or 6 string bass neck then it wouldn't be overkill however.

Whether or not the wood was properly seasoned is more important for neck stability.

Sure, it's overkill. I usually do it anyway (except for laminating wood to wood with epoxy. Why do that?). No one ever said that overkill is not getting the job done.

Am I the only one who thinks an overly stiff(overkill) neck is good for tone. I believe it keeps the energy in the body, instead of vibrating the neck. My use of carbon fiber in necks isn't just for durability. The neck is pretty much the only area we can overbuild without hurting the tone. OTOH, if quick decay is what you're after......................................... I think you'd be better off making changes in the body, and still keep the overly stiff neck.

Thanks for all your input. Looks like I will be using carbon fiber on my next build.
